Maple Syrup Taffy!

There is no better way to embrace winter than with maple syrup taffy!  It is simple to do and the only ingredient is real maple syrup.  This is a great activity to do with kids, however, because of the high heat required to boil down the maple syrup, keep them clear until it is time to roll the taffy onto the sticks.  Read below for step by step instructions…

What you will need:

  • 1 cup of 100% real maple syrup.
  • 10-12 Popsicle sticks
  • Candy thermometer or cup of water (See step 2 for more details)
  • 2 baking pans of clean packed snow

Instructions:

Step 1:  Have your kids collect clean snow (clean being the key word) and pack it into the baking pans.

Step 2:  Pour 1 cup of maple syrup into a small pot with the candy thermometer and bring it to a boil over medium heat, continually stirring until the candy thermometer reads 240F.

NOTE:  If you do not have a candy thermometer, you can test the syrup consistency in a cup of water.  Simply drip in a small amount of syrup into the water.  If the syrup dissipates, continue to cook it down.  If it forms small balls then it is ready.

Step 3:  As soon as you are done boiling down the syrup, pour strips of the syrup into the snow.

Step 4:   Take your popsicle sticks and roll the now taffy maple syrup onto the ends of the sticks.

Step 5: Enjoy!
